Life-long love of learning
Children build curiosity, attention, and the habits that make learning feel worth returning to.
About Red Granite
A tuition-free public charter school in Wausau where art, science, story, handwork, nature study, and relationships help children become confident, curious, independent thinkers.
Nature still belongs in the week: through study, seasonal attention, and walks on the Rib Mountain trails.
Mission
Red Granite Charter School nurtures each child individually and empowers them through a holistic education. Our commitment is to foster a life-long love of learning and critical thinking by keeping kids engaged with the outdoors, one another and the world around them. We provide a safe and supportive learning environment in which every child is equal and all are welcome.
Nature studies, seasonal work, and walks on the Rib Mountain trails are woven into the week — a living connection to place, not a separate program.
Vision
Red Granite seeks to send into the world confident, curious, and independent thinkers who will lead a life of purpose, contribution, and direction.
Why it feels different
Formal academics matter here. So do readiness, movement, attention, self-advocacy, beauty, practical work, and belonging.
Our goals
Children build curiosity, attention, and the habits that make learning feel worth returning to.
Students practice asking questions, making choices, solving problems, and bringing original work forward.
Nature studies and trail walks help children learn care, responsibility, and place in concrete ways.
A balanced education gives children many ways to observe, make meaning, and express what they understand.
Children learn to know their strengths, use their voice, and participate with confidence.
Public Waldorf education
Red Granite is an Initiative Member of the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education. Our work is guided by seven core principles that shape how we teach, govern, and grow together.
Education addresses the whole child — physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and moral — helping each child find their own path through life.
Curriculum is organized around seven-year developmental phases, with methods designed to meet children where they actually are, not where the calendar says they should be.
We cultivate balanced thinking, self-awareness, independent judgment, initiative, and an active sense of responsibility toward the world.
Enduring relationships — and the time needed to build them — are central to the work of this school. Teachers, students, and families know one another as people.
We work to increase access for all sectors of the community and use inclusive approaches that meet every learner.
Faculty, staff, and board share in governing the school with accountability, care, and the authority to act on what matters.
We commit to continuous learning, honest self-reflection, and ongoing improvement — for children and for the adults who serve them.
In practice
Children meet lessons through movement, making, nature study, music, stories, conversation, and practical work.
Every child is treated as equal, welcomed as they are, and guided toward growth with care.
Students are asked to notice, compare, wonder, practice, and explain — not only to remember.
Public charter school
Red Granite is a tuition-free public charter school chartered through the Wausau School District. Its Waldorf-inspired approach belongs inside a public school promise: access, welcome, transparency, and care.
